Oakham Celebrate Their Opening.

The First Oakham Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club

Local residents Mark & Tracey Taylor hosted the first Armed Forces & Veterans Breakfast Club on Saturday 11th August 2018 at the Grainstore Brewery in Oakham.

Mark an Armed Forces Veteran himself has only been out of the Army less than 3 years having completed 26 years’ service and decided on settling down with Tracey and his family in Oakham on completion of his full service. Tracey who currently works in Adult Services within the local area remarked that It is evident that there really is a large service and veteran community within Oakham and it was too good an opportunity to miss to try and acquaint likeminded folk together in a formal meet within the community.
There are no subs or joining fees. All veteran or service personnel will ever have to pay for is their own breakfast.
Mark & Tracey decided that this would be a good opportunity and spoke to the Grainstore Brewery who kindly agreed to host the Breakfast and the rest was then simply down to word of mouth via various social media platforms and Rutland Radio which then gathered real interest from then on in.
There really was a fantastic turnout for the first meeting which saw over 40 personnel of all ages from across all three of the services unite over a superb breakfast. It was a real opportunity for serving and ex serving personnel to come together and share stories of old and discuss candidly about their own experiences of service life.
It must have been quite daunting for some to meet up for the first time, but it was evident from the off that everyone was made to feel very welcome.
A celebration cake was made for the event and was kindly cut by our oldest veteran attending on the day, Ron.
The event was kindly supported by representatives from SSAFA, Rutland County Council, The RBL and the NHS all of whom have kindly extended their support moving forward with future events.
Mark & Tracey would like to thank everyone who attended and look forward to the next Breakfast which is due on the 8th September again to be hosted at the Grainstore Brewery.
